Prospects of Russia-Ethiopia Cooperation Explored at BRICS+ Lecture

The BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre conducted a lecture on the 127th anniversary of Russia-Ethiopia diplomatic relations. International journalist Georgiy Pavlov discussed the historical context, highlighting Ethiopia’s current economic growth and its role in BRICS. He stressed the importance of cultural understanding for effective partnerships, along with educational ties between Russia and Ethiopia.

In 2025, Russia and Ethiopia will mark the 127th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. To commemorate this event, the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre hosted a lecture by international journalist Georgiy Pavlov, discussing the historical and future prospects of their bilateral ties. This event was reported by “Za Rubejom”.

Diplomatic relations were established between Russia and Ethiopia in 1898 when a Russian diplomatic mission, led by Pyotr Vlasov, arrived in Addis Ababa. The Russian Cultural Centre was inaugurated in 1945, attended by Emperor Haile Selassie I. In 1978, the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was signed, enhancing their partnership.

Pavlov emphasized that Ethiopia has become a significant partner for Russia in Africa, stating that its inclusion in BRICS is vital. “Ethiopia is indeed the ‘key’ to Africa. If earlier only South Africa represented the continent within BRICS, today Ethiopia also represents this continent honourably,” he remarked.

He highlighted Ethiopia’s role as a leader in investment, particularly in infrastructure and industry, noting a GDP growth of 8.1% in 2024, making it one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. Pavlov pointed out that Africa will be crucial in global population growth and demographic shifts in the coming century.

To engage effectively with Africa, he mentioned the importance of understanding local languages and cultures to foster equal partnerships, saying, “To successfully engage with Africa, it is important to learn its languages and culture to avoid communication mistakes and build equal partnerships.”

The lecture also addressed educational collaborations between Russia and Ethiopia. The Russian House in Addis Ababa features a faculty preparing students for admission to Russian universities and offers programs for young specialists to gain experience in Russia. The BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre, established in October 2024, aims to enhance humanitarian cooperation and promote culture, science, and education between nations.

The lecture at the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relations between Russia and Ethiopia, which continue to evolve in significance. The potential for economic and educational cooperation, especially through initiatives like the Russian House in Addis Ababa and Ethiopia’s role in BRICS, underscores the importance of cultural understanding and investment for mutual growth. Pavlov’s insights emphasized Ethiopia’s growing influence in Africa and the necessity of learning its culture for successful collaboration.
