Although Hezbollah’s parliamentary coalition backed Salam’s cabinet appointments, they did not support his selection as prime minister.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce congratulated Salam and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. She stated that the Lebanese people have long lacked a government capable of uniting the country and restoring state institutions. Bruce noted, “America is partnering with Lebanon’s new government as it enacts urgently needed economic reforms,” affirming continued U.S. support for the Lebanese Armed Forces during this transition.
Nawaf Salam has a history of condemning Israel while serving as Lebanon’s ambassador to the UN, voting against the nation 210 times in 11 years. He has characterized Israeli leadership as engaging in “ethnic cleansing” through terrorism and organized violence, labeling Israel as an “apartheid” state on numerous occasions. Meanwhile, a ceasefire agreement established between Israel and Hezbollah has been compromised multiple times by the latter since its initiation on November 27.
