Iran has reported a total of $224 million in handicraft exports for the current Persian calendar year, which began on March 20, 2024. The Minister of Cultural Heritage, Tourism, and Handicrafts, Seyyed Reza Salehi-Amiri, indicated that an equivalent amount is believed to have been exported via suitcase trade. The government is working to eliminate obstacles hindering handicraft exports, collaborating with the Central Bank to address foreign exchange commitments and offering insurance to artisans.
Salehi-Amiri described the future of Iranian handicrafts as promising, mentioning that Saeed Al-Qaddoumi, president of the World Crafts Council, referred to Iran as a “paradise of handicrafts.” This highlights the substantial artistic and commercial value of Iranian artisans on the global stage. Salehi-Amiri also emphasized the cultural importance of the simultaneous observance of Nowruz and Ramadan, expressing confidence in the public’s ability to honor Ramadan traditions while preserving social activities.
During the closing ceremony of the 9th International Fajr Handicrafts Festival, Salehi-Amiri praised Iran’s significant contributions to global handicrafts and acknowledged its rich heritage. “Iran has always held a special place in my heart. With 16 cities and villages designated as global handicrafts hubs, Iran’s dedication to its artistic traditions is unparalleled,” he stated. Al-Qaddoumi also recognized the festival organizers, stressing the importance of fostering international connections among artisans.
