Hungary is dedicated to supporting Christian communities in Lebanon, emphasizing their significance for regional stability in Central Europe. The government has invested millions in various projects to enhance local living conditions and infrastructure for these communities. Additionally, addressing the return of Syrian refugees is critical for Lebanon’s future, with Hungary ready to contribute to mechanisms that promote long-term development.
Hungary’s government remains committed to supporting Christian communities in the Middle East, as emphasized by Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. At the conference titled “Lebanon’s Future through Christian Eyes,” he noted the importance of regional stability for Central European security. He highlighted Lebanon’s significant Christian population and Hungary’s responsibility to assist communities facing challenges and persecution.
Szijjártó articulated the need for aid that empowers Christian communities to remain in their homes rather than relocate. He detailed the efforts of the Hungary Helps program, which has allocated substantial resources to support Christians in the Middle East, particularly Lebanon. Essential investments include creating jobs, building schools and health institutions, and restoring places of worship.
Over the past seven years, Hungary has executed 38 projects in Lebanon, totaling nearly $20 million, notably restoring close to 100 historic Christian churches. The minister emphasized the importance of addressing the return of Syrian refugees to Lebanon as a pivotal issue for its future and the wellbeing of the Christian community.
Szijjártó stated, “The necessary political, security and economic conditions must be created… to lift this huge burden from Lebanon.” He called for an open dialogue regarding the challenges Lebanon faces. The conference aims to establish a long-term development mechanism in Lebanon, with contributions from various stakeholders to support local initiatives. Hungary is prepared to host this mechanism’s secretariat in Budapest.
The Hungarian government underscores the importance of aiding Christian communities in Lebanon to maintain stability in the region, crucial for Central European security. With significant investments and a focus on creating sustainable local conditions, Hungary aims to bolster these communities and address pressing issues such as the return of Syrian refugees. Collaborative efforts from multiple stakeholders are essential for long-term development in Lebanon, which Hungary is willing to facilitate.
