The Druze community in southern Syria has formed the Suwayda Military Council to protect itself from threats following the fall of Assad. Despite some improvements in local safety, the community faces ongoing challenges from extremist groups and political uncertainties.
The Druze community, primarily found in southern Syria’s Suwayda region and surrounding Jabal al-Druze, has historically been cautious about external threats. Comprising a distinct ethnic minority in the Middle East, the Druze faith blends beliefs from Islam, Hinduism, and Greek philosophy. Despite participating in local defense units, the community has faced violence from ISIS and neglect following the civil war under Assad’s regime.
On February 24, in response to ongoing insecurity, armed Druze factions established the Suwayda Military Council. This coalition aims to protect the Druze community from external threats and government oppression amid political changes following the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Local Druze leaders initiated this council to safeguard civilians and coordinate efforts with other security groups.
Although Ahmed Al Shareef, a member of the Druze community, noted some improvement in safety after Assad’s regime weakened, he acknowledged persistent dangers from gangs previously supported by the regime. The Druze people face challenges outside Suwayda as well, with reports of coerced conversions in Idlib under extremist groups.
The council’s commander, Tareq Al Shoufi, envisions integrating into a unified Syrian army while promoting principles such as secularism and democracy. However, not all Druze leaders support this proposal. Sheikh Hikmat al-Hajri, a spiritual leader, denounced the council, claiming it does not represent the community.
Discussions between Ahmad al-Sharaa, the interim president and HTS leader, and a Suwayda delegation are ongoing regarding community participation, security, and economic recovery. Many Druze remain skeptical of al-Sharaa’s intentions, especially regarding governance and transparency in leadership.
The Suwayda Military Council has adopted a flag reminiscent of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. They have signaled willingness to collaborate with the SDF in combating shared threats. The council is actively documenting former regime officers and has gained local factions’ allegiance for enhanced security.
The formation of the Suwayda Military Council marks a significant development for the Druze community amid ongoing instability in Syria. By establishing this coalition, the Druze aim to secure their safety and influence future governance while navigating the challenges posed by emerging leadership dynamics. Despite internal divisions and external threats, there exists a potential for collaboration among Druze factions and broader regional groups to foster security and stability.
