Cyclone Garance Devastates Reunion Island, Causing Losses and Displacement

Cyclone Garance has resulted in at least three deaths and extensive damage on Reunion Island, with winds over 200 km/h and heavy rainfall. Thousands are without power and water, while many residents have evacuated to emergency shelters. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities manage the aftermath of the storm.

Tropical Cyclone Garance struck Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, leading to the deaths of at least three individuals, according to French police. The severe weather brought winds exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph) and intense rainfall, resulting in significant flooding, power outages, and extensive property damage. Authorities advised residents to remain indoors as the storm continued to pose risks.

Over 847 residents sought refuge in emergency shelters, while 54 individuals were evacuated due to imminent threats of flooding or landslides. As of the latest updates, approximately 182,000 people were left without electricity, and 171,000 lost access to clean drinking water. Damage assessments indicated roofs, doors, and windows were extensively damaged across the island.

In response to the crisis, tarpaulins are being dispatched to the most affected areas in eastern Reunion to provide temporary shelter. Following the lifting of the highest purple cyclone warning, rescue operations were able to commence, although a red warning remained in effect due to ongoing heavy rains. The island’s main airport recorded wind speeds of up to 214 kilometers per hour (133 mph).

Reunion Island is situated 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) southeast of Mayotte, which recently faced its own disaster from Cyclone Chido, causing 40 confirmed fatalities and leaving 41 individuals missing or presumed dead. The devastation from that cyclone raised concerns for possible additional casualties.

Cyclone Garance has severely impacted Reunion Island, resulting in three fatalities and significant infrastructural damage. Emergency services are actively assisting residents affected by the storm, while many continue to experience power and water outages. The situation remains critical as authorities assess the ongoing risks of flooding and structural vulnerabilities. Closures and precautions are still in place to ensure public safety as weather conditions remain unstable.
