Africa to Exceed 1.5°C Climate Change Threshold by 2040, Study Shows

A study highlighted in CABI Reviews reveals that all five African subregions are projected to surpass the 1.5°C threshold by 2040, despite low emission scenarios. Conducted by experts from various African institutions, the research emphasizes the importance of transitioning toward resilient agricultural practices in the face of climate change.

Recent findings published in CABI Reviews indicate that every subregion of Africa will exceed the crucial 1.5°C climate change threshold—set by the Paris Agreement—by 2040, even under low emission scenarios. This research was conducted by a collaborative team from the University of Zimbabwe, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Kenya, and the African Group of Negotiators Experts Support (AGNES).

The literature review undertaken aimed to create a framework for agricultural transitions in Africa towards low emissions and resilience to climate impacts, under the projected scenario of 1.5°C global warming. Despite Africa contributing less than 4% to global greenhouse gas emissions, alarming predictions still show that all five subregions will face the 1.5°C threshold by 2040 under even optimized emission conditions.

A notable image illustrates the challenges faced by pastoralists, such as the Dassanech community in Ethiopia, who must navigate water scarcity while moving livestock in drylands, a situation exacerbated by climate change conditions.

The research underscores the urgency for Africa to implement climate-resilient strategies and low emission pathways, given that all subregions are set to surpass the 1.5°C threshold by 2040. Despite the continent’s limited contribution to global emissions, proactive measures are essential to mitigate the impending impacts of climate change and secure sustainable agricultural practices.
