The Mimosa Mining Company, part of Sibanye-Stillwater and Implats, commissioned SRK to design the facility, completed in May 2022. Following the design phase, civil works and infrastructure construction will last until March 2024, overseen by SRK for quality assurance and scheduling.

TSF-4 stands as Zimbabwe’s second largest tailings storage facility, measuring about 1 km by 1.3 km, with a substantial capacity for storing tailings based on a monthly production of 466,000 tonnes over two decades. Critical to the project was the active involvement of local companies, like Forit Contracting and Kumba Resources Zimbabwe. The project was designed to adhere to the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), ensuring safety and effectiveness in local conditions.

Unique challenges posed by a high talc content in the tailings required sophisticated design solutions. This includes a complex drainage system that effectively manages water in the tailings, preventing structural risks associated with ineffective drainage. As stated by SRK engineer Robert McNeil, rapid water removal through the dam’s foundations is crucial for maintaining the structure’s integrity and longevity.

The facility incorporates numerous drainage components, such as strategically placed drains that reduce the risk of failure, and internal paddocks that facilitate the deposition and settlement of coarser tailings. These paddocks promote optimal drainage and prevent fine materials from clogging the main drain. The innovative use of both clay and high-density polyethylene lining further enhances the structure’s durability against seepage and operational hazards.

Mimosa’s operational strategy emphasizes redundancy and critical infrastructure duplication, illustrated by two penstock towers that allow for maintenance without disrupting operations. This structural resilience is complemented by local quality assurance efforts led by Kumba Resources Zimbabwe, which utilized an on-site laboratory for efficient material testing and assurance.
