Despite previous resolutions calling for de-escalation, the situation remains dire with continued attacks. The need for accountability from the warring factions was emphasized by US representatives.

On Wednesday, the UN Security Council convened to examine alarming reports concerning the ongoing conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan. Members of the Council expressed deep concern over the situation, detailing the harrowing conditions faced by civilians. Edem Wosornu, from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, emphasized that despite a June 2024 resolution urging de-escalation in North Darfur, assaults on civilians persist unabated.

Barbara Woodward, UK’s permanent representative to the UN, highlighted the deteriorating conditions despite the two-year mark of the conflict. “More violence, more families ripped apart. More children starving,” she stated, reflecting the dire humanitarian impact on communities affected by the conflict.

John Kelley, the Acting U.S. alternate representative, reiterated the necessity for accountability regarding the atrocities committed by the combatants, specifically the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). He stated that both factions must face consequences for the suffering they have caused.

The UN Security Council’s recent discussions showcased the dire humanitarian crisis in Sudan and South Sudan, underscoring the need for immediate action.
