Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele of Solomon Islands and Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea conducted a successful bilateral meeting during the Honiara Summit, where PM Marape announced a K5 million aid package. This financial assistance is designated to help the Solomon Islands Government in hosting the Pacific Islands Forum Summit scheduled for September this year.
The meeting served as a valuable opportunity to reinforce the long-standing ties between the two nations. PM Manele expressed his condolences to PM Marape for the recent death of former PNG Prime Minister, Sir Julius Chan, acknowledging the late leader’s significant contributions to PNG’s development.
Highlighting historical and cultural connections that predate colonial borders, PM Manele emphasized the importance of these relationships between the Solomon Islands and PNG. Additionally, he accepted an invitation from PM Marape to attend PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Port Moresby on September 16.
Furthermore, PM Manele assured PM Marape of Solomon Islands’ respect for PNG’s sovereignty and reiterated a stance of non-interference concerning Bougainville’s political issues. PM Manele also expressed gratitude for PNG’s longstanding support over the years.
In response, PM Marape thanked Manele for accepting the Independence Anniversary invitation, underscoring its importance to PNG’s citizens. Additionally, he highlighted the presence of over 50 PNG companies in the Solomon Islands, involved in various sectors such as hospitality and agriculture.
PM Marape informed PM Manele of forthcoming state-of-the-art medical facilities in PNG for cancer, heart, and kidney treatments, inviting Solomon Islands patients to utilize these services at local rates. There was also mention of potential budget support for the Solomon Islands from PNG between 2026 and 2030, similar to past assistance.
Both Prime Ministers acknowledged the promise of support and agreed that senior officials from both countries should hold regular meetings annually, with prime ministers convening biennially to discuss cooperation issues.
The meeting between PM Manele and PM Marape highlights the commitment both leaders have to strengthening their diplomatic and economic relations. The K5 million support for the forum, acknowledgment of historical ties, and plans for regular bilateral discussions demonstrate a collaborative approach to regional issues and mutual assistance.
