Felix Jones Returns to South Africa’s Coaching Staff After England Tenure

Former England assistant coach Felix Jones has rejoined South Africa’s rugby coaching staff after a brief period away. His experience as a defense consultant contributed to two World Cup victories. Despite a short stint with England, he returns to assist with the Springboks’ upcoming season and World Cup preparation.

Felix Jones, a former assistant coach for England, has rejoined South Africa’s rugby coaching staff. The 37-year-old previously contributed as a defense consultant, playing a significant role in the Springboks’ Rugby World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023, before a short stint with the England team after the latter tournament.

Jones resigned from the England coaching staff in August after eight Tests, citing dissatisfaction with the unstable working environment. Although he was subject to a 12-month notice period, he transitioned into remote analysis during the Autumn Nations series and officially exited his role in December 2023.

He will now work alongside Rassie Erasmus, having been appointed as an assistant coach for the upcoming Rugby World Cup cycle. Erasmus emphasized Jones’s previous contributions, noting, “He was a vital cog in the coaching team from 2019 to 2023, and his experience, professionalism, and excellent work ethic will make him a great addition to the fantastic coaching team we built from the beginning of 2024.”

Erasmus also highlighted Jones’s familiarity with the coaching staff and the value of his overseas experience. This expertise will aid the Springboks as they prepare for a demanding international season, with the objective of defending their World Cup title in Australia in 2027.

Felix Jones’s return to South Africa’s coaching team is a strategic move aimed at leveraging his extensive experience. Having previously contributed to two Rugby World Cup victories, he is expected to enhance the Springboks’ performance. His established rapport with the coaching staff and insights gained from his time in England further solidify his anticipated impact in the team’s future endeavors.
