Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed’s Landmark Visit to Somalia Signals Improved Relations

Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia for the first time since tensions over Red Sea access, indicating improved relations. His meeting with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud aims to strengthen trade and security cooperation between the countries, which follows diplomatic efforts to resolve previous conflicts. The visit also reflects ongoing commitments to regional stability amid complex geopolitical challenges.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent visit to Somalia marks the first since a controversial agreement over Red Sea access created tensions between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu. His arrival at Aden Abdulle International Airport came amid heightened security following recent mortar shelling, highlighting the ongoing fragile security situation in Somalia.

Upon his arrival, PM Abiy was greeted by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and both leaders are scheduled to discuss critical trade partnerships and diplomatic ties, aiming to repair relations after months of estrangement.

A statement from state media noted that their discussions will emphasize security cooperation, economic collaboration, and strengthening diplomatic relations, underscoring a mutual commitment to regional stability.

Somalia recently joined an alliance with Egypt and Eritrea, Ethiopia’s historical rivals, through a Tripartite agreement that has influenced Addis Ababa’s regional engagements. Notably, relations between Ethiopia and Somalia improved after negotiations in Turkey, resulting in agreements to form technical committees to address maritime access issues while respecting Somalia’s territorial integrity.

Prior to the Prime Minister’s visit, Ethiopian military leadership was enhanced with General Burham Jula’s trip to Somalia, culminating in the approval of Ethiopian National Defense Forces’ participation in the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).

Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia signifies a pivotal step towards mending strained relations between the two countries after disagreements over Red Sea access. The discussions aim to strengthen trade, security collaboration, and diplomatic ties. These developments are crucial for regional stability, especially in the context of Ethiopia’s complex relationships with neighboring countries and existing alliances.
