Ethiopia PM Enhances Somalia Relations Amid Tensions

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia for talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, focusing on enhancing reconciliation, security, political matters, and counter-terrorism. Despite reports of mortar attacks nearby, the Ethiopian delegation departed safely. The visit follows recent tensions over Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, which led to a restoration of diplomatic ties earlier this year.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Somalia to engage in discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, focusing on enhancing fragile reconciliations. Their agenda includes issues surrounding security, political dynamics, economic cooperation, and counter-terrorism efforts within the region, as stated by the Somali government. Despite reports of mortar attacks near the airport post-departure, security officials confirmed that Abiy’s delegation left without incident.

Tensions between the two nations escalated after Ethiopia’s agreement with the semi-autonomous region of Somaliland, which aimed to provide Ethiopia access to the sea. A restoration of diplomatic relations was announced in January, following a peace agreement brokered by Türkiye. This visit is seen as a continuation of implementing the Ankara agreement established last month in Turkey.

Somaliland had indicated that an agreement with Ethiopia could entail recognition of its independence in exchange for a naval base, a significant aspiration for the landlocked Ethiopia. This arrangement provoked anger in Mogadishu, leading to the withdrawal of its ambassador from Addis Ababa, reflecting ongoing diplomatic disputes.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s visit to Somalia aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and address critical regional issues such as security and economic collaboration. The backdrop of previous tensions linked to Ethiopia’s dealings with Somaliland showcases the complexities of Somali-Ethiopian relations. The ongoing diplomatic efforts, particularly through agreements facilitated by Türkiye, indicate a move towards stability and reconciliation in the Horn of Africa region.
