Egypt Rejects Israeli Proposal for Gaza Administration Control

Egypt rejects Israeli proposals for taking over Gaza, emphasizing Palestinian sovereignty. UN officials oppose annexation and forced transfers, warning against actions undermining regional security. Hamas criticizes US President Trump’s vision for Gaza, asserting the importance of Palestinian rights in any reconstruction plans.

Egypt has firmly rejected proposals for assuming temporary administration of the Gaza Strip, emphasizing its commitment to a comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Spokesperson Tamim Khalaf described such proposals as insufficient and warned that they would exacerbate conflict cycles instead of fostering lasting peace. He reiterated the importance of Palestinian sovereignty over the interconnected territories of Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, which he views as integral to a future Palestinian state.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid recently suggested an eight-year Egyptian administration over Gaza post-conflict, backed by international debt relief for Egypt. In contrast, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk condemned proposals for annexation and forced transfers, arguing that such actions would endanger regional security.

Additionally, during discussions at a UN Human Rights Council meeting, Turk stressed the critical need to reject normalization of unlawful practices, highlighting the potential threats such measures pose to peace in the region. Meanwhile, Hamas has criticized a video shared by US President Donald Trump that envisions transforming Gaza into a luxury resort, expressing concern over the neglect of Palestinian identity and rights.

Hamas member Bassem Naim responded by stating Trump’s vision fails to address the underlying issues of Gaza’s plight, chiefly the ongoing Israeli occupation. He emphasized Hamas’s willingness to cooperate on humanitarian efforts in Gaza, provided that Palestinian sovereignty and rights are prioritized. Trump’s video presented an edited depiction of Gaza with a mocking tone, focused on a luxurious future but disconnected from the reality.

The Egyptian government has firmly rejected any proposals for governing Gaza, maintaining its stance on Palestinian sovereignty and regional stability. The condemnation of forced annexations by the UN and criticisms of Trump’s plans further reinforce the ongoing complexities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Hamas has expressed readiness to engage in dialogue focused on humanitarian relief, dependent on acknowledging Palestinian rights.
