Arcadium Lithium’s Fenix Mine is the first mine in Argentina to publish an IRMA report, measuring its adherence to responsible mining practices. While awaiting final assessment on Chapter 2.2, results indicate compliance with at least IRMA 50 standards. The three-year audit emphasized transparency and engagement with Indigenous stakeholders, marking a significant commitment to improving mining practices.
Arcadium Lithium’s Fenix Mine in Argentina has made history as the first mining operation in the country to publish an Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) report. This report assesses the mine’s compliance with the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, recognized as the industry’s most rigorous set of best practices. The mine’s achievement level is currently pending due to the need for further evaluations regarding free, prior, and informed consent, as detailed in Chapter 2.2 of the standard.
Auditors from SCS Global Services have indicated that further testimonies and detailed interviews are required to comprehensively evaluate the Fenix Mine against Chapter 2.2. These evaluations will be conducted during the upcoming IRMA surveillance audit scheduled to take place within the next 12 to 18 months. Despite the pending assessment, the Fenix Mine’s audit results indicate compliance with at least an IRMA 50 level.
The audit, which initiated on February 15, 2022, took three years to complete, marking a significant commitment to transparency and community engagement by Arcadium Lithium. CEO Paul Graves emphasized the importance of this process, stating the aim was to enhance transparency, improve stakeholder relationships, and refine operational practices. The publication of this audit report signifies an important milestone in achieving these objectives.
Globally, the Fenix Mine is among 22 industrial-scale mines participating in the IRMA independent assessment initiative. Other notable mines, such as Anglo American’s Minas-Rio and Barro Alto, have achieved IRMA 75 rankings, and Albemarle was the first lithium producer to publish an IRMA report in June 2023, achieving an IRMA 50 for its operation in Chile. Gerdau is also set to begin assessments for its Minas Gerais iron ore mines.
IRMA Executive Director Aimee Boulanger mentioned that detailed audits provide valuable insights for mining companies and communities, enabling informed decisions regarding operational performance. Independent evaluations against the IRMA Standard, which incorporates community governance, aim to alleviate adverse effects, enhance benefit-sharing, and minimize conflicts. The growing recognition of the IRMA Standard underscores its role in fostering dialogue and continuous enhancement of mining practices.
Arcadium Lithium’s Fenix Mine represents a landmark development in responsible mining practices in Argentina by being the first to release an IRMA report. The continuous evaluation process reflects the company’s commitment to transparency and community engagement. Complying with rigorous international standards, the audit encourages ongoing improvement and fosters better relations between mining operations and local communities.
