Lula’s Approval Ratings Decline Across Key Brazilian States

A recent study shows President Lula’s disapproval ratings have surpassed approval for the first time, particularly significant in São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The data indicates higher disapproval rates in the southeast and south, while even the traditionally supportive Northeast shows signs of declining approval.

Recent research conducted by the Genial investment platform and the Quest institute identifies a significant shift in public sentiment regarding President Lula’s government in Brazil. For the first time, his disapproval ratings have surpassed approval ratings across multiple states, highlighting a decline in support even in regions where he previously secured electoral victories.

As of January, Lula’s approval was reported at 47%, while disapproval reached 49%. The southern, southeastern, and central-western Brazilian states showcase the most pronounced disapproval rates. Notably, São Paulo recorded a staggering 55% negative evaluations against only 16% in approval ratings, while Minas Gerais saw 51% disapproval contrasted with 22% approval.

States such as Paraná and Goiás exhibited the highest rejection levels, with disapproval rates at 59% and 58%, respectively. In the traditionally supportive Northeast region, approval ratings remain relatively higher compared to other areas but still reflect a downward trajectory. For instance, in Pernambuco, the numbers show 33% approval versus 37% disapproval, while Bahia’s figures are 30% approval and 38% disapproval.

The findings of this research indicate a worrying trend for President Lula as his government’s disapproval ratings exceed approval in various states across Brazil. This shift is particularly evident in key states such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais, where negative sentiments are significantly pronounced. Even in the Northeast, where Lula had solid electoral backing, a decline in positive evaluations suggests potential challenges ahead for his administration.
