Gachagua Urges Nyanza and Mt Kenya Unity, Clarifies Political Differences

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for unity between Mt Kenya and Nyanza, stating that the opposition leader Raila Odinga is not their enemy. He criticized the misconceptions arising from limited celebrations following Raila’s defeat in an election, reinforcing that the dispute is specific to President William Ruto. Gachagua has been reaching out to various political leaders and aims to foster collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a recent address, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua clarified that residents of Mt Kenya should not be viewed as adversaries by supporters of Raila Odinga and the ODM party. He emphasized that the actual contention lies with President William Ruto, urging both Nyanza and Mt Kenya communities to refrain from conflict. Gachagua specifically stated, “We have a problem with President William Ruto, we have no problem with Raila Odinga and ODM.”

Gachagua elaborated on the misunderstanding regarding recent celebrations of Raila’s defeat in the African Union Commission chairmanship vote, explaining that these actions were misrepresented. He pointed out that only a minority of individuals from Kirinyaga celebrated, stating, “Some people are blaming the people of Mt Kenya for the loss just because a few women in Kirinyaga celebrated his loss.”

Throughout the interview, Gachagua emphasized his willingness to collaborate with all leaders striving for the nation’s progress, including those from the opposition. He has been actively engaging with various political figures, seeking to foster cooperative relationships in anticipation of the upcoming 2027 elections. This outreach includes notable meetings with leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua.

Gachagua’s message encourages unity between Mt Kenya and Nyanza, highlighting that their disputes should not be framed as personal animosity. By distinguishing between political disagreements and regional identities, he seeks to promote collaboration and inclusivity as essential for Kenya’s future. His proactive approach includes reaching out to opposition leaders, setting the stage for a cooperative political climate leading to the next elections.
