TGS has reprocessed the seismic dataset for Block 16 in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin, revealing new exploration opportunities. Utilizing modern processing techniques, the project improves imaging for deeper targets. The survey includes significant discoveries from the past and identifies potential recoverable oil from various geological layers, underscoring the area’s ongoing exploration relevance.
TGS has completed the reprocessing of the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset in the Lower Congo Basin offshore Angola, collaborating with the Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG). This initiative highlights the increased exploration potential in a region that has seen numerous significant discoveries recently, although the last exploration well in Block 16 was drilled back in 2013.
The recent rejuvenation project, covering 3,684 square kilometers, utilized advanced depth processing techniques to refine the imaging of the original dataset. This enhancement allows for a more detailed evaluation of deeper target plays, including both post-salt and presalt formations. Notably, the project includes coverage of the 1994 Bengo and 1995 Longa Upper Miocene discoveries in the northern section of Block 16.
Additionally, a recent assessment has identified potential oil recovery from Upper Miocene reservoirs in the southern part of the area being surveyed. The seismic survey also partially includes the Tchihumba field, which is currently being marketed by ANPG and has reported hydrocarbon-bearing zones across multiple geological layers with an estimated recoverable volume of about 136 MMbbl.
The Lumpembe-1 oil find, discovered in 2023 and drilled within Block 15/06, is undergoing development studies which overlap with the survey area, further emphasizing the region’s exploration viability.
The reprocessing of the seismic data in Block 16 highlights significant unexplored potential in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin. Advanced imaging techniques enhance the evaluation of deeper hydrocarbon targets and reaffirm the region’s attractiveness for future exploration efforts. The Tchihumba field and recent positive assessments further solidify the area’s prospects for oil recovery.
