US-India Cooperation Expands After Modi-Trump Meeting

Days after the Modi-Trump meeting, the US and India have initiated a joint agenda focused on cooperation in critical sectors such as defense, technology, and energy. Key figures like Consul General Mike Hankey and Ames National Laboratory’s Tom Lograsso are working to forge partnerships that promote innovation and strengthen ties, aligned with the US-India TRUST and COMPACT initiatives.

In the aftermath of the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the US and India have begun implementing a joint agenda aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation. On Tuesday, discussions commenced focusing on various sectors such as defense, technology, energy, and critical minerals. Consul General Mike Hankey emphasized the commitment to fostering a prosperous future through high-level engagement across government sectors, research institutions, and business communities.

The US is seeking to engage with leading institutions in India to explore collaborative opportunities. This initiative includes talks with academic and private sector entities to establish research partnerships, trade relations, and strengthen ties in the Indo-Pacific region. Hankey highlighted the focus on the ambitions of citizens and the importance of maintaining an open and free Indo-Pacific.

During the sixth edition of the Pune International Business Summit 2025, Tom Lograsso, director of the critical materials innovation hub at Ames National Laboratory, emphasized the importance of meetings between industry leaders and academia. He noted that these collaborations would facilitate strategic partnerships, promote technological innovation, and enhance people-to-people connections through joint research and development. Lograsso underscored commitments to create a lab-to-lab agreement to support ongoing R&D collaboration.

Lograsso’s visit focuses on strengthening partnerships between Ames Lab and Pune’s CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory, especially concerning critical minerals and emerging technologies. His activities align with the strategic goals outlined in the 2025 US-India Joint Leaders’ Statement and the newly launched US-India COMPACT initiative, which aims to enhance military partnership and accelerate commerce in technology.

Additionally, this visit supports the US-India TRUST initiative, which is designed to boost collaboration across the government, academia, and the private sector in crucial and emerging technologies. Lograsso is scheduled to meet with researchers from NCL, IISER, IIT-Bombay, and Symbiosis International University as part of this strategic engagement.

The collaboration between the US and India following the recent Modi-Trump meeting highlights a mutual commitment to enhance research, technology, and trade. With initiatives like COMPACT and TRUST facilitating partnerships across various sectors, both countries aim to achieve technological advancements and strengthen bilateral ties. The ongoing discussions and academic collaborations signify a promising direction for future cooperation.
