Security in the Zamzam camp of North Darfur is critically deteriorating, prompting MSF to cease operations due to safety fears. In North Darfur, security conditions at the famine-stricken Zamzam camp are described as ‘unbearable’ by aid workers. The camp, heavily affected by the conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), is inaccessible as all roads are blocked. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has suspended its operations in the area due to safety concerns, as their teams face intensified violence during their missions.
Marion Ramstein, MSF project coordinator for North Darfur, highlighted the difficulties in reaching essential services. She stated that the conflict has rendered travel from Zamzam to El Fasher impossible, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. Since the eruption of civil war in April 2023, the situation has deteriorated dramatically, resulting in over 20,000 deaths and more than 14 million displaced individuals.
MSF emphasized the dire need for support in Zamzam, where the organization previously provided critical assistance. However, due to safety risks, they had to stop operations until conditions improve. This decision was particularly heartbreaking as MSF was one of the few remaining organizations actively helping the local population with necessities, including food aid.
Reports have indicated that Zamzam camp is experiencing extreme hunger conditions, classified as IPC Phase 5, the most severe famine level. Ramstein mentioned alarming statistics regarding the health of children in the camp, revealing that a significant percentage suffers from acute malnutrition. In a recent vaccination campaign, 34% of 29,300 children screened were identified as malnourished.
Approximately 500,000 individuals currently reside in Zamzam camp, with many displaced from nearby regions like Abu Zerega and Shagra. Reports from these displaced families include widespread violence, including killings and sexual abuse, creating a severe humanitarian crisis in North Darfur. Aid is urgently needed as the conditions continue to worsen.
The security situation in Sudan’s Zamzam camp has forced Doctors Without Borders to suspend operations due to escalating violence, marking a significant setback in providing aid.
