Sudan’s government has declared intentions to escalate actions against Kenya for supporting the RSF, indicating potential economic sanctions such as banning the import of Kenyan tea. The RSF’s conflict with the SAF has resulted in significant casualties, and Sudan views Kenya’s involvement as a violation of international agreements.
The Sudanese government announced on February 25 that it will take escalatory actions against Kenya for allegedly supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Foreign Ministry’s Undersecretary, Hussein al-Amin, indicated that Kenya’s actions represent a hostile stance toward Sudan. Sudan plans to issue a memorandum to the African Union and other international organizations to address this situation.
Al-Amin further elaborated that Sudan is considering economic retaliatory measures, including a potential ban on Kenyan imports, particularly tea, as Sudan is one of Kenya’s major tea markets. He accused Kenya of enabling the RSF, which has been engaged in conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) since mid-April 2023.
The Sudanese official characterized Kenya’s role in hosting the recent signing ceremony for the RSF’s founding charter as a blatant interference in Sudan’s internal matters. This charter aims to establish a parallel government in Sudan and is viewed as an infringement on international agreements set by organizations such as the UN and the African Union.
Additionally, a violent conflict has escalated in Sudan since April 2023, resulting in significant casualties. Reports indicate that by the end of 2024, the death toll has reached at least 29,683 individuals due to this ongoing strife between the RSF and SAF.
Sudan’s threats against Kenya underscore the increasing tension resulting from Kenya’s alleged support for the RSF in the conflict with SAF. With potential economic sanctions looming, Sudan seeks to assert its sovereignty in response to perceived external interference. The situation remains critical as humanitarian concerns rise amidst ongoing violence.
