This diplomatic dispute arose after the Founding Alliance for Sudan was initiated in Nairobi, a coalition linked to General Hemedti’s RSF that seeks to rival the current government in Port Sudan.
The RSF is under US sanctions due to allegations of genocide in Darfur. In response to the meetings in Kenya, Sudan’s foreign ministry condemned Kenyan President William Ruto for his “disgraceful position” supporting the RSF, characterizing it as a violation of Sudan’s sovereignty.
Political figures and civil society in Kenya expressed confusion over President Ruto’s approval of the RSF meeting. Former Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua criticized the situation on social media, calling it an embarrassment, while activist Willis Evans Otieno suggested that Kenya should not host foreign insurgencies.
