The Government of South Sudan is set to conduct extensive geological surveys to identify and map mineral resources across the country. Mining Minister Martin Gama Abucha and new undersecretary Dr. Matiok Santino Akuei emphasize the importance of tapping into the nation’s untapped mineral wealth for economic growth.

The Government of South Sudan is initiating a comprehensive mapping project to determine the locations and sizes of undiscovered mineral deposits across the nation. During a recent gathering in Juba, Mining Minister Martin Gama Abucha emphasized that conducting extensive geological surveys would yield critical information regarding South Sudan’s rich mineral resources, facilitating better resource management.

Minister Abucha stated, “We must map our resources so that we understand what we have and know what quantities we have so that we know where they occur.” He articulated that the development of geological maps is essential to help government agencies and mining stakeholders recognize and safeguard significant mineral resources.

Dr. Matiok Santino Akuei, the newly appointed undersecretary of the mining ministry, highlighted the economic potential of the country’s untapped minerals, including gold, copper, zinc, uranium, and diamonds. “Today, we must plant the seed of investment and that will bear fruit for future generations,” he remarked, emphasizing the necessity for investment to exploit these resources.

The recent leadership change in the ministry, where Dr. Coasmas Pitia was replaced by Dr. Akuei, is pivotal in driving the mining sector forward to address challenges in resource extraction and economic development.

South Sudan is embarking on a geological survey initiative to identify and map its mineral resources as part of a strategy to boost economic development. The government aims to utilize its mineral wealth for future investments, recognizing its potential for economic growth and the need for effective resource management. The new leadership in the Ministry of Mining is expected to play a crucial role in these developments.
