Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has announced the suspension of its operations in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, where increased violence has rendered the area too dangerous for medical assistance. Despite the ongoing humanitarian crisis, the charity emphasized that it had no choice but to halt all activities, including those of its field hospital.
Zamzam camp, which is home to around 500,000 displaced individuals due to Sudan’s civil war, has been a crucial location for humanitarian aid. MSF had been one of the few organizations providing essential medical services, treating casualties from recent violence and addressing malnutrition among children.
Yahya Kalilah, MSF’s Sudan country director, expressed the heart-wrenching nature of this decision, stating that the violence’s proximity and logistical challenges made continued operations impossible. The ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese military severely disrupts humanitarian aid efforts.
Since the start of the war in April 2023, tens of thousands have died, and millions have fled due to escalating hostilities. Recent clashes, including an attack by the RSF at Zamzam, have forced thousands of families to abandon their homes, while MSF has documented severe injuries among the camp’s residents.
In February, 139 patients were treated for gunshot and shrapnel wounds, although the lack of adequate equipment led to 11 fatalities, including five children. The situation has deteriorated with ambulances being targeted, hindering access to care.
Moreover, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of potential escalations in the conflict after the RSF announced plans for a rival government formation. Guterres’s statement indicated a deep concern over how this fragmentation may worsen the already dire state of the country.
The RSF’s unilateral move to establish a parallel government, amidst allegations of war crimes, signals the potential solidification of divisions across Sudan, particularly impacting the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region.
