This marked the 12th edition for baseball and the eighth for softball in the region. The initiative, a collaboration between the Tanzania Baseball and Softball Association (TaBSA) and the Japan-Africa Baseball & Softball Foundation (J-ABS), showcases Tanzania’s commitment to youth sports development.
The Koshien Project is a premier Under-18 baseball and softball championship in Tanzania. The 2024 events were held nationwide, featuring athletes from regions such as Dar es Salaam, Pwani, and Zanzibar. Beyond athletic competition, the project serves as a development platform for young players, enhancing their skills and preparing them for future international challenges.
Acting Secretary-General Abubakary R. Nachiwa highlighted the importance of the Koshien project, stating, “The Koshien project is a crucial step in Tanzania’s efforts to expand the reach of baseball and softball. It allows young players to compete at a high level while preparing for international competition.” Shinya Tomonari, President of J-ABS, has been instrumental in supporting this project for the past 12 years, facilitating its growth and success.
Tanzania’s Koshien initiative has proven to be the most successful in Africa, with similar programs launched in Ghana and Kenya. Other countries, including Nigeria and Cameroon, are poised to implement their own Koshien-style championships through the Africa 55 Koshien Project. The continued momentum of baseball and softball in Africa reflects a growing interest in these sports across the continent.

It unites young athletes and fosters sports development through competition, discipline, and teamwork,” noted Nachiwa.
