Galp’s Mopane-3X appraisal well offshore Namibia confirmed significant light oil and gas-condensate deposits. Meanwhile, Rhino Resources’ Sagittarius-1X well found hydrocarbons in Block 2914. Both wells indicate promising potential for further exploration and resource development in the region.
Galp has successfully demonstrated the presence of light oil and gas-condensate through its Mopane-3X appraisal well located offshore Namibia in the Orange Basin. Drilled at a depth of 1,200 meters and situated 18 kilometers from the initial Mopane-1X discovery, this well aimed to explore multiple targets, including the AVO-10, AVO-13, and deeper sand formations in the Mopane complex.
Initial findings revealed significant columns of light oil and gas-condensate in AVO-10 and light oil in both AVO-13 and the deeper sand, found in high-quality sandstones. Logging data indicated strong porosity, high pressure, and exceptional permeability, with fluid samples returning low viscosity oil and minimal concentrations of CO2 and H2S.
These insights, coupled with higher-than-expected pressures at Mopane-3X, indicate promising prospects for further exploration in the southeast region of the Mopane complex. Galp plans to integrate all collected data into the reservoir model, aiding in the strategic planning of subsequent activities. A 3D seismic acquisition campaign is currently underway and will finish next month, followed by data analysis.
In another development, Rhino Resources has reportedly discovered hydrocarbons with its inaugural exploration well, Sagittarius-1X, also offshore Namibia. Drilled by the Noble Venturer drillship in Block 2914, this well confirmed pay zones within Upper Cretaceous targets, showing no water contact.
The Noble Venturer is now stationed to commence drilling a second well for Rhino and their partner Azule Energy on the Capricornus prospect. This new exploration will target a northeast-southwest trending channel system in a different geological fairway, located south of the Mopane discovery and northwest of Total’s Venus oil field.
Both Galp and Rhino Resources have made significant offshore discoveries in Namibia, highlighting the region’s potential for hydrocarbon resources. Galp’s Mopane-3X well has validated the presence of light oil and gas-condensate with encouraging geological characteristics, signaling further exploration opportunities. Meanwhile, Rhino’s Sagittarius-1X discovery adds to the excitement in Block 2914, demonstrating the ongoing interest in Namibia’s offshore prospects.
