Egypt has rejected the formation of a parallel government in Sudan following a charter signed by the RSF and various factions in Kenya. In a political consultation meeting, Egypt reaffirmed its support for Sudan’s legitimate government while addressing the regional conflict that has led to a humanitarian crisis.
On Sunday, the Sudanese Foreign Ministry announced Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to establish a parallel government to the legitimate Sudanese government. This declaration follows the signing of a political charter by the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and various Sudanese political factions, aimed at creating an alternative governing body in Nairobi, Kenya. Sudan’s government criticized Kenya for facilitating this alleged conspiracy.
During a meeting of the political consultation mechanism held in Cairo, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yousif Sharif and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty addressed the ongoing situation in Sudan. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s stance against external interference and the establishment of any parallel governmental frameworks, affirming support for Sudan’s legitimate authorities.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF has led to significant casualties, with estimates of over 20,000 dead and 14 million people displaced, as reported by the UN. Some research from U.S. universities suggests the death toll may be as high as 130,000. The international community continues to urge for an end to the violence, warning of a looming humanitarian crisis due to severe food shortages affecting millions.
Egypt firmly opposes the creation of a parallel government in Sudan, supporting the existing legitimate government while condemning any external interference. The ongoing conflict has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian conditions, urging international calls for peace and aid in affected areas.
