Custos Energy has announced a successful drilling at Mopane-3X in PEL 83, Namibia, revealing significant oil and gas potential. The well displayed promising results across multiple prospects, confirming favorable reservoir characteristics. Initial fluid samples indicate low viscosity and minimal harmful gases, paving the way for future exploration activities in the region.
Custos Energy has provided an update on its ongoing exploration efforts in Namibia’s Orange Basin, specifically in PEL 83—home to Blocks 2813A and 2814B, which hold significant potential for oil and gas extraction. These blocks are operated by a Galp Energia subsidiary, with Custos and NAMCOR each holding a 10% working interest.
The Mopane-3X well, part of PEL 83, was successfully drilled and logged, commencing on January 2, 2025. This well, located 18 km from the earlier Mopane-1X well, targeted two stacked prospects, AVO-10 and AVO-13, as well as a deeper sand formation, at a water depth of approximately 1,200 meters.
Preliminary results show significant columns of light oil and gas-condensate in high-quality sandstone across AVO-10, indicating a promising reservoir. Similarly, light oil has been confirmed in AVO-13 and the deeper sand, with favorable reservoir log measurements that suggest good porosity, high pressure, and permeability.
Initial fluid samples from Mopane-3X are showing low oil viscosity alongside minimal CO2 and H2S concentrations, with further analysis pending. The higher-than-expected pressures and results from this well suggest additional exploration potential within the Mopane complex’s southeast region.
The data collected from this drilling will enhance the reservoir model and guide future activities. Additionally, a proprietary 3D seismic acquisition campaign is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2025, with processing to follow. Knowledge Katti, Custos’ Chairman and CEO, emphasized the significance of these discoveries for the potential of the Mopane complex.
Custos Energy’s recent drilling at Mopane-3X has revealed significant oil and gas reserves, indicating strong exploration potential in Namibia’s Orange Basin. The successful drilling and favorable preliminary results suggest a promising trajectory for future explorations in the region, supported by advanced seismic studies underway. These developments bolster Custos Energy’s strategic positioning in a highly prospective hydrocarbon province.
