Following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime by Sunni rebels last December, concerns have risen about the protection of minority sects in Syria, which make up 25% of the population. The new government has promised an inclusive approach, yet there remain doubts among minorities regarding their future safety and rights.
As the rebels gained ground in Damascus, Shiite communities feared retaliation and violence towards their religious sites. After some Sunni factions threatened a prominent Shiite shrine, many Shiite residents sought refuge in Lebanon, highlighting their vulnerability amid rising tensions.
In response to these fears, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, the interim president, reassured citizens of his government’s commitment to protecting minority groups. He emphasized that coexistence within Syria is crucial and aims for collaboration among various sects, though skepticism persists among the affected communities.
Although calm has settled over some areas, many minorities remain cautious about the changing political landscape. Local Shiite leader Sheik Akram Mustafa calls for unity and peace, stressing that it’s vital for all groups to collaborate in rebuilding a harmonious society.

Moreover, the Alawite community experiences its own struggle, with many expressing relief at Assad’s removal but also facing calls for vengeance against them due to their previous affiliations. Alawites like Tareq Khateeb argue that they too suffered under Assad’s regime and should not be scapegoated post-conflict.
New government initiatives include a general amnesty for soldiers detached from war crimes, aiming to protect all minorities and prevent further sectarian retribution. However, this assurance does not equate to equal rights under a new governance framework.
The Christian community has voiced apprehensions about being sidelined politically. Rimon Salloum, a representative of the Syriac Orthodox Church, has urged that they should not merely be labeled as minorities but treated as equal citizens actively participating in political discussions and constitutional reforms.
Despite the government’s initial promises to embrace all sects, the urgency for tangible actions is paramount. Ensuring the true representation and protection of Syria’s diverse populace will be critical in fostering trust among its various communities during this transitional phase.
The new Syrian government faces significant challenges in securing the trust of various minority communities following the change in regime.
