Angolan Archbishop Calls for Unity to Achieve Independence Goals

Archbishop José Manuel Imbamba emphasized the ongoing social and economic disparities in Angola, urging the need to address division and inequality to fulfill the nation’s independence aspirations. Speaking at CEAST’s annual assembly, he called for new political approaches that focus on the common good, especially as the country approaches its 50th independence anniversary.

Angola has seen development since gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, yet social and economic inequalities persist, burdening many citizens with poverty. Archbishop José Manuel Imbamba, President of the Bishops’ Conference of Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe (CEAST), stressed the importance of addressing these disparities to fulfill the nation’s independence aspirations during CEAST’s First Annual Plenary Assembly in Luanda on February 24.

As Angola approaches the 50th anniversary of its independence, Archbishop Imbamba noted that political narratives often keep citizens tied to a painful history. He highlighted the need for a new political approach focused on serving the common good and ensuring the well-being of all Angolans. In his address, he urged national leaders to consider the individual challenges faced by their citizens during the five-day assembly, which concludes on February 28.

The Archbishop’s statements underline the pressing issues of division and inequality in Angola as the country nears the milestone of independence’s Golden Jubilee. His call for leaders to prioritize unity and the common good is essential for achieving true independence that reflects the aspirations of all Angolans, moving away from past constraints toward a more equitable future.
