Veteran Afghanistan all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has indicated that he will not retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following the ICC Champions Trophy. At age 40, Nabi plans to reduce his ODI appearances to nurture upcoming talent while remaining contingent on his fitness for future games. He was part of Afghanistan’s first ODI side in 2009 and continues to be a pivotal member of the national team.
Despite his age, Nabi expresses eagerness to continue his international career, stating, “I am still thinking (about the future). These might not be my last ODIs, I will probably play less ODIs and give chances to the youngsters to build experience”. He has consulted senior players about his future participation, highlighting the importance of fitness to his decision.
Recently victorious in the Bangladesh Premier League with Fortune Barishal, Nabi feels encouraged as he prepares for Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad. He shared, “The preparations for the Champions Trophy have been good. I did three sessions with the national team in Abu Dhabi so I am in good shape.”
Nabi’s strong performances in the BPL have boosted his confidence. He noted, “Winning the BPL gave me more confidence, from a tough position in the final. In the whole tournament, we did really well and my performances were good… I helped finish the job in four or five matches.”
As Afghanistan approaches the Champions Trophy, the lineup also includes promising new talent. Notably, 20-year-old spinner Nangialai Kharoti has garnered Nabi’s support, with Nabi stating, “He is a youngster, who has been doing really well over the last two years.” Kharoti, alongside Rashid Khan, adds depth to Afghanistan’s formidable spin bowling attack.
Nabi praised Rashid Khan’s skills, asserting, “He is the greatest bowler in the world in T20 and Inshallah, he will have 1000 wickets soon!” He described Khan as both aggressive on the field and personable off it, emphasizing his continuous desire for wickets.
The Afghan team is set to begin its Champions Trophy journey against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi, showcasing their blend of veteran leadership and emerging players.
