Iraq is accelerating a power grid connection with the GCC to address chronic electricity shortages. The project involves two transmission lines connecting from Kuwait to Basra, with significant progress already made. It aims to enhance Iraq’s power supply and reduce reliance on Iranian energy imports.
Iraq’s Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil recently met with officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Interconnection Authority to expedite a critical power grid connection project. This initiative aims to link Iraq’s electricity supply with the GCC countries, enhancing energy access for Iraq, particularly in Basra.
The project will connect Iraq to the Gulf power system through two transmission lines originating from Kuwait’s Al-Wafra station. Specifically, one of the lines will stretch 77 kilometers from the Safwan border crossing to Al-Faw station in Basra, facilitating a significant electricity supply increase.
As part of the project, installations of towers along the 22-kilometer segment from Safwan to Shatt al-Basra have been completed. Additionally, survey work and clearance of war remnants have been finalized across 50 kilometers, reducing potential hindrances to construction.
The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity is coordinating with the defense ministry to clear the remaining four kilometers before commencing civil works. Minister Fadhil emphasized the importance of continuous work efforts in three shifts to accelerate project timelines, adhering to directives from Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
Iraq has historically struggled with electricity shortages, particularly during the extreme summer months. The current power grid has suffered from years of conflict and poor management, resulting in frequent blackouts and a heavy reliance on Iranian electricity imports.
The Gulf power interconnection project is anticipated to provide an additional 500 megawatts of power to Basra. Concurrently, a separate agreement with Saudi Arabia is expected to deliver an initial supply of 1,000 megawatts, further bolstering Iraq’s energy infrastructure.
