On Sunday, residents observed the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), which includes the M23 group, asserting their presence in the city as they aim to extend their influence over the resource-rich region. A statement from the AFC declared they had seized control of Kavumu Airport, prompting government forces to retreat.
Victor Tesongo, a spokesperson for the AFC, confirmed their presence in Bukavu and stated, “We have control of Bukavu since this morning.” Meanwhile, witnesses reported looting and the presence of fighters in the streets, amid an absence of visible government troops. They noted that local government forces had fled.
Accounts from residents indicated that the M23 rebels had established control over key strategic locations in Bukavu, including the provincial governor’s office and the Saïo military camp. As local reports revealed, the provincial governor had evacuated the city ahead of the rebels’ occupation.
The swift advancement of the rebels follows their recent control of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. This escalation in hostilities has resulted in significant casualties, with previous government reports indicating over 3,000 fatalities arising from battles in the area.
Allegations against Rwanda have surfaced, suggesting support for the M23 group, which is predominantly composed of ethnic Tutsis. Despite accusations, Rwandan President Paul Kagame recently stated he was unaware of any Rwandan troop involvement in the DRC.
Since 2022, the M23 has intensified its rebellion against the DRC government, claiming to represent Rwandophone interests. They have also conquered resource-rich areas in eastern DRC, including the significant mineral deposits in Nyabibwe and Rubaya.
