Investigation Underway into Missing 25,000 Rounds of Ammunition in Trinidad

An investigation has begun into the loss of over 25,000 rounds of ammunition from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment. National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds has requested in-depth inquiries to address potential national security implications. A dedicated team was appointed to conduct the investigation after the ammunition was noted missing during a recent examination at Cumuto Barracks.

The Trinidad and Tobago government has initiated an investigation regarding the unusual disappearance of over 25,000 rounds of 5.56 ammunition from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment. National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds confirmed this investigation, which follows reports that the ammunition went missing during its relocation in 2022 from the 1st Engineer Battalion Bunker at the Cumuto Barracks.

Hinds emphasized the serious nature of the situation, acknowledging the public concern it has generated. He has requested a thorough investigation to fully understand the circumstances of the incident, declaring, “Taking note of the concern that such a story would naturally raise… I requested that a thorough investigation of this matter be conducted.”

To facilitate this probe, a three-man team has been appointed and commenced work after the ammunition was discovered missing earlier this month. The ammunition was relocated within the barracks compound in a prior operational shift. Colonel Keston Charles, the regiment’s commanding officer, issued directives to investigate, reflecting the military’s commitment to accountability.

Hinds reassured the public that the investigation will ascertain the legitimacy and scope of the missing ammunition claim, indicating readiness for further actions if necessary. He stated, “I am aware of it and the matter I assure you will be looked into and if there is a need for resolution… [it would be done] as quickly as possible.”

The investigation into the disappearance of over 25,000 rounds of ammunition from the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment highlights significant national security concerns. Minister Fitzgerald Hinds is overseeing the inquiry to ascertain how and why the ammunition went missing during relocation in 2022. A dedicated team will investigate, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the situation and seeking accountability if needed.
