The Latin American Artificial Intelligence Index (ILIA) 2024 reaffirms Chile, Brazil, and Uruguay as pioneers in AI, having excelled in enabling factors, research, development, and governance. In a study of 19 regional countries, Chile led with a score of 73.07, followed by Brazil at 69.30 and Uruguay at 64.98. The index revealed that while AI talent concentration has doubled in the past eight years, it still lags behind that of Global North countries.
These three nations are advancing AI strategies across all sectors, bolstered by a supportive environment for innovation and technology adoption. Chile’s Minister of Science, Aisén Etcheverry, emphasized the importance of the index for guiding effective policies and adapting to the changing nature of information consumption, especially among youth.
Javier Medina Vásquez from ECLAC noted that AI could drive development and tackle regional challenges in various sectors, but swift action is necessary to avoid exacerbating economic disparities. The EU-LAC Digital Alliance is prioritizing AI for its potential to transform societies, as emphasized by Claudia Gintersdorfer, the EU ambassador in Chile.
CENIA’s Rodrigo Durán pointed out that the integration of AI tools in key jobs could significantly boost Chile’s economic growth. Although there is growth in AI talent in the region, challenges remain with retaining talent, noting that Costa Rica and Uruguay have managed to attract talent effectively.
The findings indicate that Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay show significant advancements in technological infrastructure, AI talent development, and governance frameworks. These nations boast high capacities in research and development, ensuring they remain competitive on the global stage.
