The primary objective of Operation Maravalha is to tackle illegal logging occurring in protected areas and Indigenous territories, which have some of the highest deforestation rates in the nation. Jair Schmitt, head of environmental protection at Ibama, emphasized the importance of curbing the extraction of illegal timber to prevent further deforestation. He stated that a significant portion of timber harvested illegally is sold locally, with some reaching international markets like the United States and Europe.
Ibama is also scrutinizing timber projects on private lands that may be fraudulently masking the origins of illegally sourced timber. Following the raids, the agency intends to suspend certain timber projects implicated in laundering activities related to protected forests. Schmitt remarked that the extraction of valuable timber typically leads to broader deforestation as remaining forest areas are cleared for cattle ranching, funded by profits from illegal timber sales.
Under President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has prioritized Amazon protection, deforestation levels fell to their lowest in nearly a decade last year. However, environmentalists continue to express concern about the ongoing threats posed by illegal logging and fire activities, which may not be fully reflected in government reports regarding deforestation.
