His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the President of Liberia, addressed the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He reaffirmed Liberia’s dedication to justice, democracy, and unity among African nations. Expressing gratitude for the warm welcome, he congratulated Angola’s President João Lourenço for his election as Chairperson of the AU, acknowledging the previous Chair, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, for his leadership.
Focusing on the AU’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” President Boakai joined his fellow leaders in advocating for reparations to confront the historical injustices of slavery, colonialism, and systemic racism. He stated, “Liberia firmly believes in the importance of reparations as a critical first step toward addressing the lasting legacy and impacts of these historical injustices,” highlighting Liberia’s unique position in this discourse due to its founding by freed slaves.
He further emphasized Liberia’s ongoing commitment to promoting justice, healing, and reconciliation, underscoring that reparations could facilitate unity among African nations and the diaspora. Additionally, he acknowledged the AU’s support during Liberia’s recent elections, which helped maintain peaceful and transparent democratic processes.
President Boakai welcomed the AU’s endorsement for Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2026-2027, stressing the importance of collaborative efforts to advance peace, security, and economic development across Africa. He shared details about Liberia’s ARREST Agenda, a five-year developmental initiative focused on Agriculture, Roads, Rule of Law, Education, Sanitation, and Tourism.
Concluding his address, President Boakai assured that Liberia would consistently strive to be an active partner in realizing the AU’s goals and aspirations for a more prosperous Africa, emphasizing joint efforts towards continental unity and resilience.
