Iraqi Kurdish Leader Endorses ‘Terror-Free Türkiye’ Initiative

The delegation from Türkiye’s DEM Party met Masoud Barzani to discuss the “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, conveying a message from jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. Barzani expressed his readiness to support the peace process, and the DEM anticipates a significant call from Öcalan regarding disarmament of the PKK. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to end long-standing violence in the region.

A delegation from Türkiye’s Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) met with Masoud Barzani, a prominent Iraqi Kurdish leader, to discuss the “terror-free Türkiye” initiative. The DEM lawmakers brought a message from Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the PKK terrorist organization, during their meeting in Irbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Barzani, leader of the Kurdistan Democrat Party (KDP), held the presidency of the KRG from 2005 to 2017. His nephew, Nechirvan Barzani, currently administers the KRG and supports Türkiye’s efforts against the PKK.

The initiative aims to subdue violence linked to the PKK, which has persisted since the 1980s. Barzani is willing to facilitate peace efforts while the DEM Party anticipates Öcalan’s historical call for PKK disarmament. The meetings reflect a broader diplomatic engagement meant to stabilize the region and address Kurdish self-rule amidst ongoing conflict.
