President Zelenskyy, speaking at a security conference in Munich, indicated that Europe should also be involved in the negotiations. He emphasized that Ukraine must be included in any discussions about its future, stating, “Ukraine will never accept deals made behind our backs without our involvement, and the same rule should apply to all of Europe.”
Zelenskyy shared that during his conversation with President Trump, the latter did not mention the necessity of European representation in the negotiation process, highlighting a potential shift in U.S.-Europe dynamics. He asserted, “The old days are over when America supported Europe just because it always had,” suggesting a need for Europe to foster its own military capabilities.
After his conversation with President Putin, Trump announced on his social media platform that both leaders agreed on the urgency of halting the ongoing conflict, asserting, “We both agreed, we want to stop the millions of deaths taking place in the War with Russia/Ukraine.” Trump also indicated skepticism about Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and the likelihood of reclaiming occupied territories in the short term.
Zelenskyy articulated the primary concern surrounding the peace talks, urging that any negotiations should not proceed according to Putin’s objectives. He expressed, “We must not allow everything to go according to Putin’s plan,” stressing the importance of Ukraine’s agency in the process.
