Pacific Partnership 2023 has arrived in Samoa with USS Jackson leading a multinational humanitarian effort. Pacific Partnership 2023 (PP23) has commenced in Apia, Samoa, with the arrival of USS Jackson (LCS 6) on September 13. This mission is the largest annual multinational effort aimed at humanitarian assistance and disaster relief readiness in the Pacific, fostering collaboration among participating nations. The operation emphasizes enhancing disaster response capabilities and building lasting friendships within the Samoan community.
The Pacific Partnership mission engages in various humanitarian and civic preparation initiatives. Key areas of focus include engineering projects, disaster response training, public health initiatives, and community outreach events in Samoa. The joint mission involves nearly 1,500 personnel from multiple countries, enhancing cooperation on disaster readiness and aid efforts.
“This year’s mission features nearly 1500 personnel. It is a joint effort on behalf of Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States,” – Royal Navy Captain Joe Dransfield, deputy mission commander. The collaboration will feature the New Zealand Defense Force and Royal Navy alongside the U.S. military.
In Apia, PP23 aims to provide focused medical care, community education, and the construction of essential infrastructure. Furthermore, the U.S. Pacific Fleet woodwind ensemble will engage with the community through various performances. Activities also include knowledge exchanges related to disaster response and humanitarian assistance operations.
“We’re delighted to be a part of the Pacific Partnership 2023,” said Noriko Horiuchi, chargé d’affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Samoa. She emphasized that the mission would strengthen U.S.-Samoan relations and involve a diverse team, including musicians, medical professionals, engineers, and disaster relief experts.
In addition to Samoa, the PP23 team will extend its missions throughout Southeast Asia and the South Pacific Islands. This broad engagement aims to enhance regional disaster preparedness and humanitarian capabilities within diverse communities.
