Iran has stopped Lebanese repatriation flights, leaving nationals stranded after Lebanon denied an Iranian flight access due to Israeli allegations of arms smuggling. The situation reflects escalating tensions involving Hezbollah and military actions by Israel, pressing Lebanon to tighten aviation security measures until a ceasefire agreement’s terms are reassessed.
Iran has prevented Lebanese planes from repatriating its stranded nationals in response to Lebanon denying an Iranian flight access to land in Beirut. This action follows a statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), claiming that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard was using civilian flights for illicit activities with Hezbollah. The IDF threatened to use any means necessary to uphold a truce requiring Lebanon to stop arms shipments to the Iran-supported group.
The standoff, which has left dozens of Lebanese citizens stuck in Iran, resulted from their expected return via Mahan Air being blocked. These citizens had attended a religious pilgrimage but have been waiting for three days to return home. Iranian officials declared that Lebanese flights would remain prohibited until their aircraft were allowed to operate in Beirut once again.
Iranian officials, including Baghaei, condemned Israel for what he described as violations against international law and Lebanon’s sovereignty, urging the International Civil Aviation Organization to intervene. Lebanon’s aviation authority announced a temporary rescheduling of several flights, including those from Iran, for additional security measures, effective until February 18, coinciding with a ceasefire deadline.
Under a ceasefire agreement, Hezbollah was expected to withdraw from southern Lebanon, but reports indicate that Israel aims to extend its presence beyond the agreed deadline. Throughout the recent conflict, Israel has repeatedly claimed that Hezbollah utilized Beirut airport for arms transportation from Iran, following Hezbollah’s provocations starting on October 8, 2023. This led to significant displacement in regions of northern Israel.
The tension between Iran and Lebanon has escalated as Iran restricts travel for Lebanese nationals stranded in Iran due to Lebanon’s prohibition of Iranian flights. Israel’s ongoing military actions and accusations against Hezbollah continue to exacerbate the situation, with Lebanon increasing security measures for incoming flights. The conflict demonstrates the complex interplay of international aviation safety and regional military disputes.
