India and Chad officials met in N’Djamena to enhance bilateral cooperation in critical areas including trade, health, and education. On Thursday, officials from India and Chad convened in N’Djamena for Foreign Office Consultations, where they agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in several key areas. The meeting was led by Sevala Naik Mude, Additional Secretary at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Fatime Aldjineh Garfa, Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs of Chad. They discussed enhancing relations particularly in trade, health, education, digital infrastructure, agriculture, and cultural exchanges,
During the discussions, Minister Garfa acknowledged India’s role in advocating for the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20, highlighting that this would elevate the Global South’s influence. The two nations reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in various sectors, mentioning agriculture, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, and defense as emerging focus areas.
The bilateral trade relations have seen a shift, peaking at USD 513.59 million in 2018-19 but declining to USD 83.48 million primarily due to reduced crude oil imports from Chad. Despite this, around 45 Indian firms remain active in the Chadian market, focusing on oil and other sectors. Bharat Airtel has notably invested over USD 1.5 billion, establishing itself as the leading mobile network in Chad.
Chad actively participates in international discussions including the Voice of Global South Summits, and is also a member of the International Solar Alliance. This ongoing interaction reflects both countries’ commitment to fostering a strong bilateral relationship, rooted in shared values and mutual respect.
The recent Foreign Office Consultations between India and Chad underscore a commitment to deepen bilateral ties in diverse sectors such as trade, health, and technology. While trade volumes have declined, the presence of Indian companies and significant investments indicate ongoing economic engagement.
