He was welcomed at the airport by Ethiopian Deputy Chief of Protocol Eshetu Legesse, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Amb. Nasir Aminu from the Nigerian embassy in Ethiopia.
Following his arrival, Minister Tuggar briefed President Tinubu on the summit as well as recent diplomatic victories for Nigeria, which extended into the early hours of Friday. Among these successes was the re-election of Amb. Bankole Adeoye as African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Nigeria’s continued position on the African Union Peace and Security Council.
The briefing included key officials such as Finance Minister Wale Edun, Defence Minister Abubakar Badaru, Trade Minister Jumoke Oduwole, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, and Information Minister Muhammed Idris, along with several other prominent figures from the Nigerian government.
This year’s AU summit revolves around the theme “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” which emphasizes reparative justice and racial healing initiatives. President Tinubu is scheduled to speak at the Summit-level meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council, focusing on current security issues, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In addition to security discussions, President Tinubu will engage in meetings related to health financing, the establishment of an African Credit Rating Agency, and climate change matters. He is expected to return to Abuja on Monday after the conclusion of the summit.
