Mercy Cherono, a prominent figure in Kenyan athletics, is poised for a strong comeback following a two-year hiatus due to family and job commitments. The four-time Olympic champion has expressed her eagerness to participate in both local and international events, aiming to bring pride and medals to her country. She has been training diligently in Kericho, determined to return to top form in long-distance running.
Cherono boasts an impressive record, being a two-time world junior champion in the 3000 meters and securing gold at the 2010 World Youth Championships and 2014 Commonwealth Youth Games. Additionally, she has excelled in cross-country running, achieving silver medals in the 2009 World Cross Country Championships and the 2010 World Junior Championships. Her return comes as an inspiration to many within the athletics community.
In a recent interview, Cherono expressed satisfaction with her training progress. “I am really progressing well in my training. Running is my passion, and I will not get tired. I really appreciate my fans who have been following me… the answer is yes. I want to promise them I will do my best,” she stated.
After taking maternity leave in 2023 and continuing her career as a National Police officer while studying at Kiganjo Police Training College, her competitive appearances have been limited. However, she participated in the National Police Cross-Country Championships, where she finished eighth, along with other events at the Kericho Betika Cross Country and Bingwafest in Eldoret by the end of 2024.
Cherono acknowledged the challenges she faced in her training journey, particularly after maternity leave. “It was not that easy since you have to shed a lot of fat, and then you now start concentrating on the training programme. It is not easy and it is not something you can start in a day,” she explained.
Looking ahead, Cherono is focusing on road races included in the Athletics Kenya World Athletics calendar for the 2024/2025 season, signaling her commitment to reclaim her status in athletics.
