The 100th Annual Convention of The Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria is set to gather approximately 70,000 participants from February 19-23 in Yola. Themed “You are the light of the world,” the event will include discussions on faith and mission, reflecting on past challenges and future directions to spread the Gospel.
The Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) is set to host its 100th Annual Convention in Yola, Northeast Nigeria, from February 19 to 23, attracting nearly 70,000 participants under the theme “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14-16). Ecumenical guests and the President of the Lutheran World Federation, Bishop Henrik Stubkjær, will be in attendance for this momentous occasion.
LCCN Archbishop Panti Filibus Musa emphasized the importance of looking forward with clarity and purpose, stating, “We are called to look ahead with clarity and purpose, seeking how we, as the body of Christ, can continue to spread the transformative light of the gospel.” He highlighted the need for the light of faith to shine even brighter as they reflect on their centennial mission.
Originating in 1925, the convention serves as a forum for mission work and fellowship among believers, pastors, and missionaries. Established in 1913 by the Danish Branch of the Sudan United Mission, LCCN has grown to welcome tens of thousands annually, participating in Bible studies, prayer, and cultural activities.
Prior to the convention, approximately 700 LCCN pastors will convene for a conference on February 17 and 18, focusing on the theme “How shall we reach our own? A Century of Faith, A Future of Mission.” This question echoes the original intentions of the first convention, prompting native participants to pursue their mission.
Archbishop Musa outlined contemporary challenges, stating, “In our rapidly changing world, we face storms of injustice, hatred, violence, environmental disasters, human rights violations… Many, especially our youth, struggle with hopelessness.” He acknowledged the growing challenge from teachings diverging from the Gospel amid the deep connection between faith and daily life.
The convention program will open with a service led by Archbishop Musa and will include daily Bible studies centered on the theme. It will consist of sessions on topics relevant today, such as generational worship, stewardship of creation, and efforts to maintain unity.
The centenary celebration will culminate with festive worship on February 23. Archbishop Musa concluded, “As we celebrate this centenary event, we are reminded that our mission is sustained not by human ingenuity but by the grace of God.”
The 100th Annual Convention of LCCN represents a significant milestone, gathering a vast community to reflect on their faith and mission work. The event underscores the need for renewed commitment in addressing social challenges and advancing the Gospel. It will not only celebrate a century of achievements but will focus on future efforts to ensure the transformative message of faith continues to resonate in contemporary society.
