Iran Disputes US Claims of Support for Yemen’s Houthis

Iran rejected US accusations of providing financial and military support to Yemen’s Houthis, labeling the claims as unfounded. During a UN briefing, the US called on Security Council members to pressure Iran to stop its alleged support. Iran responded by emphasizing its commitment to peace and Yemen’s sovereignty, advocating for a political solution to the crisis.

On February 14, 2023, Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) firmly rejected allegations made by the United States regarding its support for Yemen’s Houthi movement. During a UN Security Council briefing, US Acting Ambassador Dorothy Shea accused Iran of violating an arms embargo by supplying weapons, financial resources, and military training to the Houthis for over a decade. Shea urged other Security Council members to compel Iran to cease its support of the group.

In response, Iran lodged a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Security Council President Fu Cong. The letter characterized the US claims as “unfounded” and reiterated Iran’s long-standing policy of promoting peace and a political resolution to the conflict in Yemen. The Iranian mission emphasized that the US could not distract from its own alleged complicity in Israeli actions by targeting Iran with accusations.

Moreover, Iran categorically denied its involvement in the Yemeni conflict, stating that the situation should be handled through a comprehensive political process that ensures Yemen’s independence and sovereignty. The Iranian mission’s response highlights its commitment to international law, the UN Charter, and relevant Security Council resolutions, positioning itself as a proponent of stability in Yemen.

Iran has categorically denied allegations from the US regarding its support for the Houthis in Yemen, asserting that such claims are baseless. The Iranian mission emphasizes a commitment to a peaceful political solution for Yemen, seeking to maintain its international legitimacy and focus on the situation’s resolution through dialogue rather than conflict. Iran continues to advocate for Yemen’s sovereignty and independence amidst geopolitical tensions.
