On February 13, 2025, the Co-Chairpersons of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence, Mr. Malusi Gigaba and Mr. Phiroane Phala, attended a ceremony for the repatriation of the remains of South African National Defence Force soldiers who died in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Mr. Phala expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Department of Defence, the United Nations, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the SANDF in bringing the soldiers home for burial.
The committee emphasized its appreciation for Uganda’s assistance in facilitating the transfer of the soldiers’ remains, stating that such cooperation is vital for fostering dialogue essential to resolving the DRC’s ongoing instability. Mr. Gigaba noted the importance of working together to find peace in the region.
The committee reaffirmed the importance of South Africa’s participation in peacekeeping missions under the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which seeks to promote peace, diplomacy, and conflict resolution across Africa.
