INB has received authorization from Brazil’s National Nuclear Energy Commission to export 5.7 tonnes of U3O8 enriched to 3.2% U-235. This move, motivated by operational and economic factors, aims to generate revenue and free up space for essential materials. INB will conduct an open competition for sale and must secure an export license following that.
Brazil’s National Nuclear Energy Commission has approved Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) to find an international buyer for 5.7 tonnes of U3O8, enriched to 3.2% uranium-235. Imported in 2016, this material is currently held at the Resende Nuclear Fuel Factory. INB intends to sell this uranium since it is not suitable for fuel production, thereby clearing space for essential raw materials and generating revenue for future investments.
The commission plans to hold an open competition to secure the highest bid. This strategy aims to position INB in international markets and enhance its business prospects within the global nuclear industry. After confirming a buyer, INB must obtain an export license from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Adauto Seixas, president of INB, emphasized the initiative as a strategic move that reflects INB’s capability to manage assets effectively and leverage opportunities in the international nuclear sector.
The approval for INB to seek an international sale of enriched uranium marks a significant step in Brazil’s nuclear strategy. It aims to optimize resource management and broaden market access, enabling the company to generate revenue for future investments while meeting domestic nuclear demands. INB’s efforts to resume uranium exploration also point to a renewed focus on developing Brazil’s uranium resources.
