UNICEF has reported an alarming rise in sexual violence against children in eastern Congo, attributed to both M23 rebels and government forces amid ongoing conflict. DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — UNICEF has accused armed combatants in eastern Congo of committing widespread sexual violence against children as conflict intensifies in the region. Reports indicate that both M23 rebels and government forces are likely involved in these heinous acts.
Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s Executive Director, stated, “In the North and South Kivu provinces, we are receiving horrific reports of grave violations against children by parties to the conflict, including rape and other forms of sexual violence at levels surpassing anything we have seen in recent years.”
One mother shared the harrowing experience of her six daughters, the youngest being only 12, who were systematically raped by armed men while foraging for food. Health facilities reported a drastic increase in sexual assault cases, recording 572 instances during the week from January 27 to February 2; 170 involved children.
The origin of the perpetrators remains unclear, but it is suspected that all sides in the conflict are responsible for sexual violence. The M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, are the primary faction among over 100 groups involved in the tumultuous region. Escalating hostilities have resulted in significant humanitarian crises, with Goma, Congo’s largest city, falling under rebel control.
The United Nations Human Rights Council has taken action to investigate allegations of atrocities committed in the area this year, including rape and summary executions by both the M23 and Congolese army. Recently, a trial began for 84 soldiers accused of serious crimes, including murder and rape, showcasing the gravity of the situation.
Health Minister Roger Kamba reported that 143 patients under treatment for mpox fled hospitals as conflict escalated in Goma, with efforts ongoing to recover many. Additionally, almost 100 cholera cases have been documented since the onset of the conflict in the city now fully occupied by rebels.
Despite these challenges, the Congolese government, with humanitarian assistance, is attempting to provide medical aid through established corridors from Kenya and Rwanda, although details remain limited.
