Sri Lanka’s President Advocates for Governance Reform at WGS

At the World Governments Summit, Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake highlighted the need for effective governance, revising global frameworks, and addressing climate change challenges. He called for collective action against cyber threats and global health issues, urging leaders to unite for a better future while also advocating for digital economies and social justice.

At the World Governments Summit in Dubai, Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasized the urgent need for efficient governance amid modern global challenges. He pointed out the necessity of revising established frameworks like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to address contemporary issues effectively. His call to action came during his inaugural Middle East trip as president, highlighting global debt concerns and advocating for digital economies to reduce corruption.

Dissanayake stressed the importance of adapting laws and governance systems to evolving political landscapes and safeguarding against emerging threats. He stated, “The future demands a high degree of accountability and efficiency in governance. This requires the nurturing of a collective consciousness in all individuals.”

He alerted attendees about the disproportionate impacts of climate change on lower-income nations, sharing Sri Lanka’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage. He articulated the dual awareness of the Sri Lankan people towards global issues while respecting traditional values, opining, “The people of my country are not only aware, but are also sensitive over matters taking place in any country.”

Highlighting the risks associated with technological advances, Dissanayake raised concerns about cyberattacks and advocated for more robust international cybersecurity frameworks. He remarked, “There are laws pertaining to conventional warfare where people are targeted by weapons, but where are the conventions pertaining to cyber warfare?”

The president called for global unity to address shared challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and digital transformation. He underlined the importance of collaborative efforts to tackle global health issues, including the resurgence of communicable diseases and the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases.

Dissanayake emphasized the projected increase in mental health care costs and the looming impacts of climate change on health, insisting on a focus on digital health technologies and financial support for at-risk countries. He concluded by urging global leaders to work towards, “a beautiful life and a beautiful world,” reflecting Sri Lanka’s aspirations.

The summit under the theme ‘Shaping Future Governments’ hosts over 30 heads of state, alongside representatives from various organizations and government delegations. With an agenda covering 21 global forums and more than 300 prominent speakers, the event seeks to address vital global trends and transformations until February 13.
